Mill Lane Community Primary School News

At Mill Lane we like to promote the use of outdoor learning to enhance the curriculum and to enrich the children’s learning experience. Last month, I highlighted how the Year 3 & 4 children had used our extensive grounds to create an archaeological dig to understand how we gather evidence about the past and how they had also used our Forest School area to participate in arrange of activities linked to their topic on the Stone Age e.g. building shelters and creating cave paintings. This term we have been promoting the use of outdoor learning in Maths. Our Year 6 children have been completing an area and perimeter challenge measuring the school playground and our Year 5 children created human graphs. Meanwhile, our Year 4 children were learning their 8 timestable by completing a scavenger hunt and they also reinforced their learning of coordinates using hoops as a grid. The Year 3 children completed a range of measuring activities. Our Year 1 and 2 children went outside to create symmetrical patterns.

We have not limited our outdoor learning just to Maths. The Year 2 children made the most of the sunshine to paint outside upside on to the underside of tables just like Michael Angelo and our Year 3 and 4 children spent the whole morning out on the field for some creative writing. Not to be outdone, the Year 5 and 6 children spent a day at Hill End for a ‘Survival Day’ where the favourite activity seemed to be lighting camp fires.

We have lots more activities planned for the rest of the summer term including skateboard workshops for our KS2 children and a whole school walk.

The Windmill Community Nursery News

This term at Windmill Nursery is a great time to be outside enjoying our garden.

The children were amazed when they came back after half term to see that our potatoes had grown shoots and the beans were starting to climb up the poles. Now we need to look after them and thanks to our keen Windmill gardeners, the growing area is kept weed free and well-watered. We are now really looking forward to harvest time!

As part of Mill Lane Science week, we explored Gruffland (our woodland area) with Year 3. It was fantastic to see all the children working together as they followed the winding paths, chatting about what they could see and hear. Nature collections were made along the way and the children enjoyed sharing and identifying their many treasures.

After reading Superworm, we went on a worm hunt and then made a wormery to see what worms do when they are underground. It was so exciting to lift the cover and discover what had been happening in the dark. What long tunnels they can make! Superworm’s great friend Super Ted is still having class sleepovers and we look forward to hearing his news each morning. He is having such adventures!

If you would like to know a little more about our Nursery, please look at our website www.windmillnurserychinnor.co.uk or come for a visit. The children and Super Ted would be delighted to show you around!
