Mill Lane Community Primary School News

We have had a very enjoyable month with the children going on a journey all around the world. Unfortunately, we could not actually fly every class to their chosen country, but we were able to spend the day using Google VR headsets to go on a very interesting virtual tour of countries such as Brazil, Italy, Spain and India. The children were able to visit all the tourist sights as if they were actually there. It was great to hear the children’s shrieks of excitement as they experienced different things such as meeting Rainforest creatures in the Amazon.

Each class chose to focus on one country and tried a range of activities. The Reception Class learnt Italian whilst the Year 1 children tried Indian food and the Year 2 children made guacamole. Our Year 3 children were studying Spain and not only learnt some simple phrases but also made paella. The Year 4 children got in to the spirit of Brazil by creating their own samba music and carnival masks. Finally, the Year 5 children created the Northern Lights as part of their art work and the Year 6 children had a Tae Kwon Do class as part of their experience of Japan.

All the classes took part in a Bollywood dance session where the children learnt some basic steps and then created a simple dance. The children also wore simple costumes and learnt about the Indian festival of Holi.

In our final assembly of the term, each class shared examples of their work with the parents and it was clear how much the children had enjoyed looking at different countries.
