Windmill Visit

This week we visited the windmill. We found out where it used to be, how they rebuilt it and how it works. The children were able to look inside the workshop, handle some parts from the mill and ask lots of questions; we have some budding engineers in class. I have added photos below.

If you would like to visit with your child they open on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month.

The Great Fire of London

We finished building our Tudor houses this week ready to burn next week. We will be visiting Forest School on Monday afternoon to burn the houses. As with the real fire, it will start in Pudding Lane at the bakery. Please can you send the children to school with wellies or a change of shoes.

Homework

Keep up the great reading at home. Next week I will send home passwords for online Bug Club, Purple Mash and a new Phonics app, Phonics Hero. I will stick these login details into your child’s yellow reading diary.

Bread Making

A few of the children asked me to post the recipe for the bread rolls we made at school.

Outdoor Play

To ensure we make the most of our fantastic outdoor spaces this term, please send your child to school with a suitable outdoor coat and, if possible, wellies (for jumping in puddles).

Next week we will be visiting Chinnor Windmill; a letter will be sent home at the start of next week with further details.

Reading

Another reminder to send in reading books and diaries every day so that we can read with your child at school. We will swap books and record the new book in the yellow diary. Thank you for all the helpful comments written in the diaries!

Visit from the Fire Brigade

Today we had a visit from Fire Brigade! Shortly after they arrived they were called away on an emergency call; fortunately they were able to return to school shortly after. The children were able to look around the engine, handle equipment, sit in the engine and try out the hoses! I have uploaded some photos below.

Harvest Festival

Tomorrow (Tuesday 5th October) we will be celebrating Harvest Festival in our class. Please send in your donations in the morning. We have been learning songs and we will be making more bread and (hopefully) a wheatsheaf! Keep an eye out for photos.

Reading

Please can I remind you to read as much as possible at home and record in your child’s reading diary. It is so important to read daily to improve confidence and fluency. If you have any questions please let me know.

Request for small boxes

Thank you to those who have sent in boxes. We still need some more small cardboard boxes. Anything about the size of a box of tissues would be great. Many thanks!

Friday 24th September 2021

This week we have been working hard to practise some more sounds in phonics: ai, ee and igh. We loved playing Mission Impossible, see the pictures below.

We enjoyed creating freeze frames during drama to show different stages of the Great Fire of London. The children are also learning about one more and one less than in maths.

Reading Homework

Thank you for sending in reading diaries and books during the week. If your child brought their reading book to school today they will have a new book in their bag. If you don’t have a new book in your bag, let me know on Monday and we can swap the books. You can record any shared reading in the reading diary.

Library

The children enjoyed our weekly visit to the library. We will visit again next Wednesday, so please bring in your books to exchange.

Book Bags

A parent asked me where to buy book bags; you can buy online from MPS Workwear. They are useful to keep all books together and paperwork that we might send home. Let me know if you need any other details.

Friday 17th September 2021

We have had a fantastic week. As you may have heard from your children, we are learning all about the Great Fire of London as part of our “Bright Lights, Big City” topic.

This week we became Thomas Farriner and made bread rolls. We created Tudor houses and fire in art for our brilliant display, see photo below. Next week we will be writing a first hand account of the Fire of London. In maths we are counting forwards and backwards up to 10 and looking at one more/one less.

Reading Homework

Yesterday the children visited our school library and they have all borrowed a book for the week. We will visit every Wednesday, please return the book each week to be changed.

Today your child has taken home a reading book and reading diary. Please try to read daily and record this in the diary. We read with your child during the week at school, so please send in this book and diary every day.

If you have any questions, please let me know at the door or email me at class1@mill-lane.oxon.sch.uk.

Have a lovely weekend!

Welcome to Year 1

We have had a lovely start to the term. The children have adapted to their new classroom and routine well, and we have enjoyed getting to know everyone!

I just wanted to let you know a few details for the start of the term.

Snack and Lunch

We provide snack for children in KS1, this varies day to day. If your child would prefer to bring in their own snack, please bring in a labelled container.

The children are excited to be eating lunch in the hall each day. You do not need to pre-book lunches; your child can order on the day.

PE Days

PE will be on a Tuesday and Wednesday each week. Children can now get changed in school, so please bring in your child’s PE kit on a Tuesday and Wednesday; this can stay on their peg at school. When possible, we will have some lessons outside, so please keep an eye on the weather and send in warmer clothes if necessary.

Homework and notices

Each Friday I will update this class page with news, updates and homework. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly on Class1@mill-lane.oxon.sch.uk.

Best wishes,

Nicky Palmer
