Home Learning Reception
Dear Reception children, parents and carers,
We hope that you had a good Christmas, even though it was different this year. We are missing you and sorry that we can't all be in school together at the moment.
Please log in to Purple Mash to see activities set for your child to complete at home. For the rest of this week, there is a topic blog with activities around the story of 'Kipper's Toy box' and some videos to take you through some maths activities.
Following on from this, every Friday we will add blogs for the following week. This will be in the form of daily blogs containing a set of activities to do in short bursts of time throughout the day. Keeping learning active and fun at this age is important and will help your child to stay motivated.
In between each activity allow time for your child to play! Joining them in their play will really help to maximise their progress. As they tell you their ideas they will be developing their imagination, use of vocabulary, problem solving and much more! Another tip would be to read lots of stories to your child during this time that you have together. Find a cosy place and take your time, allowing children to enjoy the pictures, give opinions about characters, discuss the meaning of words and enjoy the humour!
An example timetable to show what a home learning day might look like for Reception:
9.00 -9.20 Phonics and handwriting activity from daily blog (Phonics tends to work best first thing in the day)
9.20 - 10.00 Active play following the child's interest eg trains, construction, puzzles, drawing, crafts etc.
10.00 - 10.15 Snack
10.15 - 10.30 Literacy topic activity from daily blog
10.30 - 11.00 Active play following the child's interests or physical activity (eg online yoga or outside time)
11.00 - 11.15 Bug club reading
11.15 - 11.30 Read a story to your child
11.30 - 12.00 Active play following the child's interests
12.00 -1.00 Lunchtime
1.00 - 1.20 Maths activity from daily blog
Rest of afternoon: play, read stories to your child, activities such as cooking, board games, helping with chores (eg sorting the washing, matching and counting socks, cleaning is also good for developing physical skills - control and co-ordination for writing!). Going out for daily exercise.
This is just an example to show that for children of this age it is important to keep activities which require high levels of concentration to short bursts and intersperse with lots of active play and physical activity. The timings ofcourse are very flexible and just there to give you an idea of what the day might look like.
The daily blogs will start from next week so please use the 'Kipper's toybox' and the Maths blog for your activities this week.
There will be a pack sent to you tomorrow (Wednesday) with some resources in for your child to use at home. Your child's Bug Club log in details will be in the pack too.
Please send photos of your work or practical activities to: classr@mill-lane.oxon.sch.uk - we would love to see how you are getting on!
From next week, we will be holding video chats for small groups of children each week to give your child an opportunity to talk to us and other children and to share their work. We will also set up a 'children's blog' on Purple Mash which you can use to add photos and posts of what your child has enjoyed doing at home to keep in touch with others in the class.
Please don't hesitate to email us if you have any questions or comments - we would love to hear from you!
We appreciate that this is a difficult time for families and would like you to know that we are here to support you.
Stay safe,
The Reception Team
